South West Airways Teams

The South West Airways Teams (SWAT) course was developed by members of the ENT Clinical Working Group in 2025, led by Julian Gaskin. Members of the group first attended the Thames Valley & Wessex ‘Making Airways Safe Team’ (MAST) course in February 2025, which was then adapted to meet the needs of the South West to support the development of safe and robust paediatric emergency airway pathways across the region.

Representatives from all South West centres attended the education day in Musgrove Park Hospital in October 2025, which included a series of interactive workshops, breakout sessions, and simulation-based learning opportunities. Resources from the course have been shared with attendees to support local quality improvement work, with the aim of strengthening paediatric emergency airway pathways and delivering similar training within individual organisations. Feedback from the course was extremely positive, and the ODN will continue to build on this work across the region.

Course resources are available to South West colleagues via our NHS Futures Platform.
